AMD EXPO vs Intel XMP Memory
An interesting thing happened to us at the computer store. We had ordered a RAM kit for pickup. When we showed up, we noticed it had the “Intel XMP Certified” logo on the kit. Having the correct RAM for your system means you can easily run the memory at higher speeds than the base “out of the box” experience. But the problem was we weren’t building an Intel system, we were building an AMD system. As you can see in the picture, the kits look practically identical.
Now technically, this RAM should still work at base speeds, and you could still overclock it, but it would have to be done manually. Since we are building this for a customer, we wanted it to be really simple to maintain. So we gave it back and made sure the new kit had the “AMD Ryzen” logo on it. Sometimes it’s called AMD EXPO.
So it can matter. Just make sure when you’re choosing RAM, take a moment double check the package to match the RAM to your processor family.
